In this programme, we are delighted to present to you works by Mozart, Faure and Brahms.
The first piece on the programme is the Mozart Horn Quintet in E flat (K407) arranged by Ernst Naumann. In this arrangement the Horn and Violin part remain identical to the original, with the piano taking on the roles of the other instruments, and more! It highlights Mozart’s quintessential operatic nature and humour.
We will then perform the Faure Piano trio (op120) featuring an imaginative arrangement by Donald Frederick. Here he replaces the cello with the horn, with the piano and violin lines remaining the same. This offers an exciting new range, and a nobility of character.
After the interval we will dive into a celebration of Brahms, featuring first his Scherzo movement from the F.A.E Sonata. This was his contribution to a gift sonata for his friend Joseph Joachim and was written at the outstanding age of 20. You can certainly hear his youthfulness in this movement, with its electric tempo and energy, and in its heart on sleeve romanticism.
We will then end the recital with what might be the work most familiar when thinking of this combination of instruments, the Brahms Horn Trio (op40).
Composed in 1865, this work was one of his final chamber pieces, and highlights his mastery and maturity. Dedicated to the memory of his mother, the trio blends lyrical and pastoral elements with profound emotional depth. With a natural horn instead of a valve horn originally in mind for the composition, Brahms captures the feeling of nature and the call for the hunt that listeners can hear all the way through the work.
